Lakhani Scholars Seeks Class of 2023 Applicants
Dear friends,
We're pleased to announce that Lakhani Scholars is now accepting applications from high achieving low income sophomores (Class of 2023) through May 1, 2021.
Lakhani Scholars offers $10,000 worth of expert coaching services to qualifying students. Our program is open to low income high school sophomores with strong academic potential and ambition.
Lakhani Scholars has yielded astounding results over the past 3 years. Our first 2 Scholars were awarded full scholarships to George Washington University and Rice University. Lakhani Scholars tripled its impact by awarding 3 scholarships to the Class of 2022.
As we work toward serving 100 high achieving low income students annually by 2025, we need your help.
If you know a high-achieving, financially challenged high school sophomore, please forward them this information and encourage them to apply no later than May 1, 2021. If you know of an educator, organization, or individual who could connect us with qualified applicants, we'd be happy to speak with them personally.
Thank you for joining in our mission to expand educational access for these inspiring students!
Sincerely,
Lakhani Coaching
Our Class of 2020 & 2021 Lakhani Scholars
Lisa David (left - Class of 2020), our inaugural Lakhani Scholar, attended high school in an Atlanta neighborhood that has one of the highest concentrations of HIV/AIDS in the United States. She emigrated from Liberia and spoke no English just five years ago, but she proved to be a motivated student with big dreams of success in America. Lisa was accepted Early Decision to her top choice, George Washington University, after two years of free college admissions counseling from Lakhani Scholars.
Fernanda Padilla Colin (right - Class of 2021) aspires to work in law and politics. She aims to someday use her experience as a first-generation Mexican-American to help disenfranchised people navigate the complex immigration system. She is a squash player, sustainability club leader, robotics team member, and has a 4.0 GPA. Now a U.S. permanent resident, Fernanda was named a 2020 Questbridge Scholar Finalist and landed a 100% scholarship to prestigious Rice University.
Our Class of 2022 Scholars
Rachel Nacarino (left) immigrated to Miami, FL, from Peru in 2016, and lost her father to the coronavirus in 2020. Her mother works hard cleaning at a restaurant, and Rachel has remarkably taken her education into her own hands. Having graduated through the ESOL—English for Speakers of Other Languages—system, Rachel founded Uli Smiles, an organization of 45+ volunteers tutoring and mentoring ESOL students across three schools in Miami. Through an AP Capstone project, Rachel launched an online help group for pregnant teens, and also contributes to Fridays for Future, her school volleyball team, Science Honor Society, and Girls Who Code. She aspires to become an engineer one day.
Hayley McCombs (center) is one of nine children in a single earner household and actively helps care for her six younger siblings. Alongside chipping in financially by cleaning pools over the summer, Hayley has cultivated over 37,000 Instagram followers and launched her own cosmetics business, including making some products by hand and garnering over 100 orders in her first six months. As President of her school’s Key Club, Hayley is active in community service and runs track and field. Academically, she maintains a 3.97 weighted GPA, taking special pride in her science courses, and aspires to one day become a Neurosurgeon.
Ammar Tofafarosh (right) is the son of immigrants from Surat, India, and will be the first in his family to attend a 4-year college. Having enrolled in seven AP courses as of junior year, Ammar is committed to challenging himself academically, with a focus on Computer Science. As a leader, he is involved in Coding Club, Conservation Club, and Medical Explorers Club. During the pandemic, he led his mosque’s youth group in raising over $3000 and 660 lbs of school supply donations for over 500 students in need, multiplying his impact through partnerships with local BJ’s, Staples, and Costco stores. Ammar aspires to attend a top tier university to one day engage technology to solve humanitarian problems.
